I used to really enjoy the Chronicles of Narnia series by C.S. Lewis. Though it is a set of books for the children, every time you read it, you gain different insights. When you read it as a non-Christian, a young Christian and an “old” Christian, it is all quite different. The one that left a lasting impression on me was a part in the book called “The Horse and His Boy”, it goes:
“Don’t you think it was bad luck to meet so many lions?” said Shasta.
“There was only one lion,” said the Voice.
“What on earth do you mean? I’ve just told you there were at least two the first night, and — “
“There was only one: but he was swift of foot.”
“How do you know?”
“I was the lion.” And as Shasta gaped with open mouth and said nothing, the Voice continued. “I was the lion who forced you to join with Aravis. I was the cat who comforted you among the houses of the dead. I was the lion who drove the jackals from you while you slept. I was the lion who gave the Horses the new strength of fear for the last mile so that you should reach King Lune in time. And I was the lion you do not remember who pushed the boat in which you lay, a child near death, so that it came to shore where a man sat, wakeful at midnight, to receive you.”
I still remember I was utterly surprised when I read this part. If you read the story from the beginning, you would realise that the events mentioned by Shasta were the very moments that he had great fear and considered the most dangerous. Here, it is close to the end of the story and it is revealed that the lions to be feared were actually only one lion. It is this lion who have been behind everything to guide Shasta in the way best for him.
This part led me to meditate about our God. The lion (Aslan) helped Shasta along the way and propelled him towards his happy ending. Shasta would never have expected his life would turn out in such a great way. (I shall not give details in case I spoil you of the story.) In the same way, our God is behind us in every way, including times we think it was dangerous. It may seem bad, but God’s mighty hand and outstretched arm is behind every situation and guiding us to the right way. But do note that our God is not a God of evil, He may test us, but He will never tempt us. Rather, He allowed the events to happen and makes use of even bad circumstances to guide us to a better future.
Romans 8:28
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.
Hence, even in the toughest time we can have peace, for we know that God is in control and He is with us. We may not be able to comprehend why He allow things to happen, but as long as we follow Him with faith, one day His great purpose for us will be revealed.
